Within the humanist paradigm, the selected composers consciously employed a vocabulary of musical figures to clarify, intensify, and dramatize the meaning of the liturgical text. Through an analytic approach to three vocal fragments, the study demonstrates how this symbiosis was achieved. The examples include the setting of each word with a specific musical gesture in Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Lamentations; the use of textural contrast to musically ‘paint’ the psalm in Palestrina’s Super flumina Babilonis; and the insistent motivic repetition in Cristóbal de Morales’s motet Circumdederunt me as a sonic embodiment of the inevitability of death. The analysis reveals that these strategies are not incidental but are part of a persuasive musical discourse designed to guide the listener’s affective and pedagogical experience through the meaning of musicalized text. This article offers analysis, theory, and music-history instructors and students concrete case studies for exploring both the defining stylistic features of this historical period and the broader evolution of text–music relationships in music history.

[1429
3030,3028,3029
3149
3036,3035,3034
1403,1402
1387,1408
1388
2533
2540,2537
3152,3039,3150,3037,3038,3151

post-6888","harmanalysis_repo","type-harmanalysis_repo","status-publish","hentry","harma_source-score","harma_musical-circumdederunt-me","harma_musical-lamentations-of-jeremiah","harma_musical-super-flumina-babilonis","harma_year-16th-century","harma_composer-cristobal-de-morales","harma_composer-giovanni-pierluigi-da-palestrina","harma_composer-tomas-luis-de-victoria","harma_methods-rhetoric-analysis","harma_methods-style-analysis","harma_level-beginner","harma_level-intermediate","harma_study-bachelor","disciplines-2-music-analysis","tax_biblography_categrories-18-style-analysis","tax_biblography_categrories-20-rhetoric-analysis","analysis_tags-morales-cristobal-de","analysis_tags-musical-rhetoric","analysis_tags-palestrina-giovanni-pierluigi-da","analysis_tags-polyphony","analysis_tags-renaissance","analysis_tags-victoria-tomas-luis-de
["GET
