Max Reger on Mozart in Variation Form

Marek Podhajski

This analytical study of Max Reger’s work, written in 1914, focuses on a variation form in Romantic style (long 19th-century music), which draws on classical music through the use of a theme from Mozart’s Sonata, Op. 331. The principles of analysis and the method of presenting conclusions are based on the methodological approach proposed by the author in his teaching and outlined in his textbook for instructing students of various specializations (instrumentalists, conductors, composers, music theorists, etc.) in the analysis of musical works. The analytical description highlights the composer’s ways of using the theme throughout the cycle, the structure of the macro-form, and the means of variation techniques.
