Harma Week for Staff
The Harma staff week aims to encourage pedagogical exchange among music theory teachers from different countries, focusing on innovative teaching methods. It allows participants to explore new approaches, improve professional language skills, and discover perspectives not included in their home curricula.
The Intensive Staff Training Week is organized in the Music Academy and Theatre of Tallinn on April 20-24, 2026. This HarMA Student Week is part of the Work Package 3, Activity 3 and includes a Transnational Partners Meeting session on the first day (19/04) and followed by a 5-day intensive programme for music theory teachers from partners.
The Staff Training Week is part of our “HarMA Weeks” package, including our Intensive Training Week for Students.
Objectives
- Allow the students/teachers to learn and share knowledge with peers from other countries on the same subject (students are also welcome to follow the courses)
- Practice other ways of learning/teaching music theory courses
- Compare with other teachers music theory methodologies
- Help staff acquires their foreign language skills in the professional terminology
- Help staff to encounter subjects, perspectives and analytical methods that are not part of the educational programme of their own university
- Create opportunity to meet (future) colleagues with whom building further inspiring European professional projects and changing programme between HMEIs
Participants & Programme
We expect 30 participants from Music Theory department or any relevant department. The staff selected for this programme will all be coming from the music theory department of each partner, following the Erasmus+ mobility procedure to ensure a fair and transparent process.
Tasks & Responsabilities
Tallinn is responsible for planning, organizing, and evaluating the event.
- A summary report and feedback form are prepared for the next final report.
- The event aims to broaden pedagogical horizons and strengthen international professional networks.
Each questionnaire/form will represent an important moment during the week where feedback from users will be used to reflect, take stock and ensure the WP3 is progressing on track to achieve the general and specific objectives. Follow up interviews will be carried out, as necessary.
Contents
Innovative methods of teaching music theory and analysis are demonstrated in a 5-days staff week: academic lectures, practical workshops, and seminars.
The focus is on the content of music theory teaching and the novel aspects of its delivery (music theory pedagogy). The content side is on the direct or combined application of novel methods developed in music analysis as a scientific discipline to music theory teaching.
In terms of content, the focus is: Schenkerian analysis, set theory, computer-based (statistical) analysis, modern theories of form and how to use them in teaching traditional music theory subjects to students whose experience and knowledge of music theory is not ample.
