The book is fundamental to the understanding of Stravinsky’s music, especially in relation to the Russian and neoclassical periods. It strongly questions the validity of common theoretical concepts such as politonality. It does pioneer work in the presentation of the interaction between the two tone sets most characteristic of Stravinsky’s music, the diatonic and octatonic scales.
