Etude Op. 10, No. 1 by Fryderyk Chopin: An Explanation Based on Its Harmonic-Rhythmic Reduction

Miguel Girones Cervera

The author proposes a harmonic-rhythmic reduction of Chopin’s Etude in C major no. 1 op. 10, inspired by Schenkerian graphic analyses. Assuming that arpeggiated textures make it difficult for piano students to properly understand certain ornamental notes and also hinder their ability to discern the fundamental tonal and structural organization of a piano piece, he has prepared and made available, for educational purposes, his own audiovisual materials based on harmonic analysis.

Keywords: harmonic reduction, melodic figuration, rhythmic reduction, Romanticism
